The Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana was set up in 1972 under the Aegis of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, Government of Haryana to carry out the following aims and objectives,
- Protect and safeguard the tangible heritage of Haryana in the form of built heritage and antiquities.
- Promote Haryana's heritage and culture through publications, events, educational activities and workshops, awareness campaigns, and sensitizing the general public to ensure its protection for posterity.
- Formulate policies to involve all stakeholders, such as the local population, other government agencies, and non-governmental entities/individuals, and ensure the protection of Haryana’s culture and heritage.
- Carry out excavations and report them promptly and orderly while maintaining academic integrity.
- Carry out regular maintenance of the built heritage through conservation and preservation with sustainable and natural resources and processes.
- Collaborate with various national and international governmental and non-governmental entities/individuals to promote and safeguard Haryana’s culture.
- Create and Develop Museums throughout the state (not restricted to archaeology) to disseminate knowledge and act as centers of exchange of ideas and synergies to foster cultural resilience among visitors and various stakeholders.
- Act as nodal authority to oversee disputes with/between various governmental and non-governmental entities/individuals to ensure that the sanctity of heritage laws and legislations of the state and the country is maintained and adhered to.
Target 4.7
By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and/of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.
How?
- Create awareness about India’s and Haryana’s vibrant culture and diversity.
- Sensitize and educate the general public, Indian and Non-Indian alike about the significance and importance of India’s and Haryana’s culture and heritage and why it is important to safeguard it for future generations.
- Promote India’s and Haryana’s culture and invest the grassroots level local stakeholders in the process.
Target 8.3
Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity, and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small-and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services.
How?
- Create jobs for the local stakeholders at the sites and museums under the Department’s protection.
- Create opportunities for the youth to build their capacity in the field through workshops, lectures, and other academic endeavors.
- Empanel local heritage experts to promote Haryana’s culture.
- Create livelihoods by collaborating with local artisans, crafts workers, and small businesses by giving them platforms and exposure to a larger customer base and building a self-sustaining ecosystem for further synergies.
Target 8.9
By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.
- Collaborate with local administration and tourism departments and other small and big private entities to promote the sites, monuments, and museums and increase footfall to cater to a wider audience.
- Create and curate content through tangible and visual media to promote tourism in the state.
- Encourage innovations and interventions by adapting technology and other means to promote tourism in the state.
- Curate and create heritage tours and circuits for the tourists.
- Collaborate and engage with the local general public and small businesses to curate turn key solutions for giving unique heritage-based and cultural experiences to tourists.
Target 11.4
Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage.
How?
- Adhering to heritage laws and legislations and ensuring their integrity and sanctity.
- Regular cleaning, conservation, and preservation of the sites and monuments under the Department’s protection.
- Work with local stakeholders to maintain the status quo and safeguard the sites and monuments under the Department’s protection.
- Sensitize and educate the general public, Indian and Non-Indian alike about the significance and importance of India’s and Haryana’s culture and heritage and why it is important to safeguard it for future generations.
