Explorations and Excavations

The Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana carries out regular explorations and excavations to further augment knowledge and understanding of India’s and Haryana’s past.

Explorations

The department has listed and notified several sites and monuments throughout the state of Haryana and keeps adding to this list with regular field surveys and explorations. Among the latest explorations, the department carried out massive foot surveys and village-to-village surveys at the villages of Narwana block in Jind district in collaboration with Deccan College, Pune. It documented hundreds of prehistoric rock art and open-air sites at the Aravalli Range of Faridabad and Gurugram.

Excavations

Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to excavating sites and systematically documenting their finds. The excavations carried out by the department are,

  • Sugh, Yamunanagar Dist., PGW and Early Historic, 1963-66
  • Agroha, Hisar Dist., Early Historic-Medieval, 1978-81
  • Banawali, Fatehabad Dist., Harappan, 1983-84 and 1986-88. Collaboration with ASI.
  • Kunal, Fatehabad Dist, Pre-Harappan and Harappan, 1985-86, 1991-94, 2016-19 and 2023-24
  • Khokhrakot, Rohtak Dist. PGW and Early Historic, 1986-97
  • Jognakhera, Kurukshetra Dist., Late Harappan and PGW, 2007-08
  • Rakhigarhi, Hisar Dist., Initially by ASI but in 2013-16 collaboration with Deccan College, Pune
